History of Sámi University of Applied Sciences
Sámi education – Sámi research – Sámi institution
Sámi University of Applied Sciences was formally opened on 1 November 1989. In doing so, a long-standing wish within the Sámi community was fulfilled: to offer Sámi teacher education, in Sámi, and within a Sámi environment. This programme was soon followed by several other Sámi higher education programmes. Having a dedicated Sámi university college also made it possible to develop study programmes that resonated with the needs of the Sámi community.
Sámi education and Sámi research form both the foundation and the premise for the activities at Sámi University of Applied Sciences. This is why the institution is often described as a Sámi institution. The programmes and responsibilities of Sámi University of Applied Sciences have developed significantly since 1989, contributing to strengthening the Sámi community in many ways. Together with other institutions, Sámi University of Applied Sciences has been at the forefront of development and change within Sámi research.
Nordic Sámi Institute
The Nordic Sámi Institute was established in 1973. In 2005, it was merged with Sámi University of Applied Sciences.
We have inherited our logo from the Nordic Sámi Institute. The logo illustrates the sun, which holds great importance in Sámi life. The sun symbol also reflects that the Sámi people live in all four directions: north, south, west, and east.
