General requirements
The admission requirements for the studies can be found on the study offers page. There you will find which admission requirements apply to the different studies.
- In studies where the language of instruction is Sámi, Sámi language competence is required (with the exception of beginner courses in Sámi).
- Here you will find an explanation of how you can document the admission requirements for Higher Education Entrance Qualification real competence and Sami language competence.
- Higher Education Entrance Qualification
- Meet the general entrance requirements
- The general basis for admission to universities and university colleges in Norway is called Higher Education Entrance Qualification. Read more about your general entry requirements from the country list. If your country is not listed, check the GSU-list.
- If you do not meet the general entry requirements, you must pass some basic subjects in Norwegian upper secondary school.
- Some study programmes have requirements in specific subjects from upper secondary school, in addition to the general requirements.
Meet the Norwegian and English language requirement
- When you apply for admission you must be able to document specific levels of Norwegian and English language proficiency.
- Meet the document requirements
- You must document your education qualifications and language proficiency. Choose your country from the country list to find out what applies to you, as document requirements may vary.
- Real competence
If you do not meet the Higher Education Entrance Qualifications, you can also apply based on real competence.
- Real competence is competence in the form of knowledge and skills acquired by you through work, education, volunteer work, organizational work or spare time activities. The opposite of real competence is formal competence in the form of education or certification.
- Your work experience and prior education will then be assessed according to the study you are applying for and their entrance requirements.
To apply based on real competence you must:
- be 25 years old, or turn 25 years old the year you apply for admission and
- have at least 5-year work or educational experience, whereof a minimum of 3 years have to be relevant for the study you apply for and
- have to be suitable for the study.
These documents you must upload when applying for real competence:
- Work certificates, or certificates from volunteer or organizational work
- Diplomas, transcripts or certificates from school, classes or education that you have taken
- A motivational letter where you explain why you are applying for the study and why you think you are suitable for the study.
- Sámi language competence
In studies where the language of instruction is Sámi, a certain level of Sámi language competence is required. You can document the minimum requirements for Sámi language competence in the following ways:
- Upper secondary school in Norway: Sámi as a first or second language.
- Upper secondary school in Finland: Sámi language as mother tongue exam or long foreign language exam.
- Upper secondary schools in Sweden: Sámi language as mother tongue (modersmål) A, B and C.
- Semester Course in Sámi Language (30 credits) or equivalent education. Languge requirements for the Semester course is that the applicant must have a knowledge of Sámi languge in pair with 30 credits of Introduction Courses in Sámi language (for instance SAAL 1 and 2).
- Sámi language test conducted by Sámi allaskuvla.
Note that some studies, as the Sámi Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education, has other specific requirements.
Submit required documentation
Remember to attach documentation that you meet the admission requirements. You can also submit the documentation later, but do so as soon as possible after your application has been registered.
