Greating from Professor Gunnvor Guttorm:
The most important achievement for me is that we started both a Bachelor- and Masters degree in duodji (traditional Sámi artwork) at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences (or Sámi allaskuvla in Sámi) - And it happened at that time, when duodji was not attractive and had a low status in Western Art Education.
I am also grateful that when I was rector at Sámi allaskuvla we, together with WINU established and formalized a common “diploma for higher education”; with Indigenous Content.
We also to started a Master’s degree in Indigenous Journalism at international level with students from more than 10 countries, including Brazil, Ecuador, US, Canada, Kalaallit Nunaat, Kenya, Tanzania, Sápmi, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Finland.
I am so grateful that both - WINU and WINHEC- are important arenas and global network where we together are looking for possibilities to strengthen Indigenous Education and Research. This network is part of my “academic home”, and it will strengthen us all.
Greating from rector Liv-Inger Somby at Sámi allaskuvla
For Sámi allaskuvla it is of great importance that professor Gunvor Guttorm receives this honorary doctorate from WINU. Gunvor has worked for 36 years to promote Sámi and indigenous research in the field of duodji. She has been a productive researcher, and has published many books, and supervised many Sámi students. In duodji education she has had the right priority of using Sámi as the language of instruction.
Gunvor Guttorm is actively involved in strengthening various networks, and is still involved in international research projects.
We at Sámi University of Applied Sciences are very proud and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for honoring our only professor of duodji on Aotearoa. As the rector, I would like to have been there, but we have many talented professors, assistant professors and faculty members here, both here at WINHEC/WIPCE and WIPCE. Good luck to you all, and “mii oaidnalat” (see you!).
A heartfelt thank you to WINU, World Indigenous Nations University, for honoring our pathfinder with this prestigious awards!
