Explanations
Bachelor’s degree
A bachelor’s degree is a university-level education, and most students start at this level before moving on to further studies. Normally, a bachelor’s degree takes three years of full-time study. You will specialize in a field of study and follow a set program tailored to that subject. Most programs combine mandatory courses with elective courses. You choose elective courses based on what you want your degree to consist of or based on your interests.
In your final year, you will write a bachelor’s thesis. This marks the completion of your studies and allows you to specialize further in your chosen field. The thesis demonstrates the academic skills you have gained during the program.
A bachelor’s degree consists of 180 credit points and provides the foundation either for entering the workforce or for further studies at the master’s level. It is the basis for building your career.
Free bachelor’s degree
A free bachelor’s degree is not tied to a specific program. Instead, you compile 180 credit points and receive a degree approved by the Sámi University of Applied Sciences. At least 90 credit points must be within one subject area, at least 30 in another, 10 credits must be from independent work, and the remaining 50 credits are electives.
2-year Master’s Degree
The master’s degree builds on a completed bachelor’s degree and allows you to specialize further. It is worth 120 credit points, usually completed in two years. Most master’s programs end with a thesis worth 30 or 60 credit poinys, demonstrating the skills you have developed.
In a master’s program, you will gain deeper expertise in your field, practice academic research, and develop critical thinking skills. You will also learn to solve complex problems independently, preparing you for professional careers.
5-year Integrated Master’s Degree
An integrated master’s degree usually takes five years to complete. You are admitted directly into the master’s level without needing a bachelor’s degree first. This means that you do not receive a separate bachelor’s degree after three years. The Sámi University of Applied Sciences offers one integrated master’s degrees in Sami Early Childhood Teacher Education.
One-year and Short-term Programs
Short-term programs last one year or less, ranging from 5 to 60 credit points. These programs do not give a degree, but they may be included as part of a bachelor’s degree. Many students take them to build competence, explore new fields, or strengthen their studies.
